Matsudo is the birthplace of “Twenty
Century Pear”.
“Twenty Century Pear (二十世紀梨)” was discovered by a then 13-year-old boy
named Kakunosuke MATSUDO at the village of Ohashi (now Nijyuseikigaoka
Nashimoto-cho, Matsudo City) in 1888.Mr. Kakunosuke found a young tree of “Twenty Century Pear” at his
relative’s house by chance. He took good
care of the tree, and it bore very delicious fruits ten years later. The pear became famous for its wonderful taste. In anticipation of its becoming popular
enough to represent the pears in the 20th century, the brand of the
pear was named “Twenty Century Pear” in 1898.
In
1904, “Twenty Century Pear” also began to be grown in Tottori Prefecture. The production of “Twenty Century Pear” in Tottori
Prefecture has increased, and now it holds the first place in Japan. As a proof of friendship between the peoples
of Matsudo and Tottori, “Twenty Century Pear” still contributes to establish
ties between us in this 21st century.
